10 Simple Ways to Practice Self-Care as a Busy Mom

Being a mom is one of the most rewarding, yet challenging, things you can do. I get it — between juggling family responsibilities and everything else life throws your way, it's so easy to let self-care for moms slide. But here's the truth: taking care of yourself isn't a luxury, it's a must. When you practice self-compassion and carve out time for self-care as a busy mom, it can really change how you feel and how you show up for your family.

Here are 10 simple ways you can start practicing self-compassion and make self-care part of your daily life:


 

1. Tell Your Loved Ones When You Need Help or Space

Clear communication is essential. Your loved ones aren’t mind readers, so it’s up to you to let them know what you need. If you're feeling overwhelmed, just say so. Whether it’s asking for a break, extra help with the kids, or some quiet time, expressing your needs is not selfish— it’s self-care. By being open, you give others the chance to support you, while also caring for yourself.


2. Schedule Self-Care Like It’s an Appointment

As moms, we’re great at scheduling everything for everyone else, but your self-care deserves a place on the calendar too! Set aside time at least once a week for something that recharges you. It could be a quick walk, a coffee with a friend, or a few minutes journaling. Whatever it is, be fully present and enjoy it. Even small, intentional moments of self-care can make a big difference.

  • "I am worthy. I am enough."

  • "I am the calm in my child’s storm."

Find a mantra that resonates with you and use it to bring some extra calm when you need it.


4. Stop Judging Yourself

We all experience mom guilt and second-guess our decisions. But here’s the thing: guilt comes from thinking you should have known better, but you did the best you could with what you knew at the time. Next time you catch yourself feeling self-critical, pause, take a breath, and remind yourself that everyone is doing their best—including you. Self-judgment holds you back from being present, so let it go.


5. Practice Gratitude

Start your morning with a simple gratitude practice. After a few deep breaths, write down three things you’re truly grateful for. Be specific—rather than just saying, "I’m grateful for my kids," try something like, "I’m grateful for the unexpected hug my son gave me yesterday." This practice helps shift your mindset to positivity right from the start, and when you’re feeling grateful, judgment tends to disappear. Practicing gratitude is a great way to support self-care for overwhelmed moms.

Bonus: walks are a perfect time to practice mindfulness. Focus on the sounds around you, the feel of your steps, and the rhythm of your breath. It’s an instant reset for both mind and body, and a simple way to incorporate self-care into your busy day.


8. Call Your Best Friends Regularly

Friendships are essential for our well-being, especially when life feels overwhelming. Schedule a regular phone date with your best friend. Sometimes, catching up with a loved one and sharing what’s going on in your life is just what you need to feel lighter. It’s a great way to feel supported and connected — don’t underestimate the power of a good chat.

9. Take a Day Off Social Media

Social media can be a great way to connect, but it can also lead to comparison and overwhelm. Give yourself permission to step away for a day (or more). Focus on what’s happening in front of you, instead of what’s happening online. You’ll be surprised at how much more present and peaceful you feel when you take a break from the digital noise.
